Dr. Janet L. Perkins

Meet the experienced and friendly doctor who makes Schonhofen Optometry, P.A. the leading provider of vision care services in Elkin.

Dr. Janet L. Perkins

Dr. Janet Perkins grew up in southern Indiana and attended Indiana University. She graduated from the Indiana University School of Optometry in 1979. Dr. Perkins completed externships at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and the Low Vision Clinic in Indianapolis, Indiana. She and her partner, Dr. Lawrence Schonhofen, purchased the family eye care practice of Dr. Lin Fincannon in 1979. In 1981 they incorporated Schonhofen Optometry, P.A. and have continued practicing at the same location. In 2010 the facility was completely “rebuilt” in the shell of the original building. Dr. Perkins now enjoys practicing in a state of the art facility which converted to Electronic Health Records in 2011.

During her career she has had the honor and the pleasure to serve on various committees which structured the North Carolina and Virginia state board examinations for licensure. In addition, she served as the first female clinical examiner on the North Carolina State Board of Optometry. Subsequently, she was appointed as the first female professional member of the North Carolina State Board of Examiners in Optometry and served a five year term.

Her primary focus remains delivering exceptional, comprehensive patient care. She strives to stay in pace with technology and its applications to enhance diagnoses and patient education. Dr. Janet has specific interests in the geriatric population including glaucoma, diabetes, macular degeneration, and cataracts. She is equally dedicated and proficient in detecting and treating children’s vision problems. She is committed to giving every child the advantage of good vision. Dr. Janet enjoys giving the young, as well as her older patients the exciting freedom of clear vision without glasses by offering all modalities of contact lenses. Patients who present with more challenging needs lead to a more rewarding experience in her contact lens practice.

Dr. Perkins has been a member of Vision Source since 2010 and credits this organization of independent eye care providers with giving her renewed enthusiasm for the profession of optometry. She is a long standing member of the American Optometric Association, the North Carolina Optometric Society, and the Winston Salem District Society.

When she is not in the office she enjoys hiking and biking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, lap swimming, pure barre, yoga, and sharing laughter with friends.
